Vegetation Research in Ireland

FitzGerald Ecology is highly experienced in vegetation research in Ireland, and its practical application.

We have experience with applying and adapting the methodologies employed for the National Survey of Upland Habitats, the Irish Semi-natural Grasslands Survey and the National Survey and Assessment of the Conservation Status of Irish Sea Cliffs, amongst other national vegetation research studies.

Our experience ensures that our clients receive tailored and strategic insights for effective vegetation management and conservation.

Our Approach to Vegetation Research

FitzGerald Ecology’s approach to vegetation and ecological research in Ireland is comprehensive, integrating the latest scientific methods and ecological insights:

In-Depth Vegetation Studies

  • Species Identification and Analysis: Conducting thorough field studies to identify and catalogue plant species across Ireland’s diverse habitats.

  • Plant Community Analysis: Assessing the structure, composition, and dynamics of plant communities.

  • Novel Literature Research: We are constantly vigilant for new published literature research which is relevant to developments in species identification and plant community analysis.

Data Analysis

  • Advanced Data Compilation: Utilising modern data collection and analysis tools to compile and assess vegetation data. These have included PC-ORD, R and Datadesk.

Applications of Vegetation and Ecological Research

Our research service is instrumental for a variety of purposes, benefiting numerous stakeholders in Ireland:

  • Conservation Strategies: Assisting conservationists, Biodiversity Officers and other land managers in developing strategies to protect and enhance vegetation diversity.

  • Environmental Policy Development: Providing government agencies with crucial data for informed policy-making in plant and vegetation conservation.

  • Academic Research and Education: Serving as a valuable resource for academic institutions conducting vegetation research.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
