Ecological Clerk of Works Services in Ireland

An Ecological Clerk of Works (EcoW) plays a critical role in the construction and development industry, particularly in projects where there are potential impacts on the environment. As specialists in ecology and ecological management, our ECoWs act as the crucial link between development activities and the protection and responsible management of the natural environment.

Why an Ecological Clerk of Works is Essential

  • Ensuring Compliance: Guaranteeing that development projects adhere to all environmental regulations and planning conditions.
  • Protecting Biodiversity: Actively overseeing and advising on measures to protect wildlife and habitats during construction.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identifying and addressing ecological risks, preventing costly delays and legal complications.

The crucial link between development activities and the protection of the natural environment.

FitzGerald Ecology’s approach to providing ECoW services in Ireland is comprehensive, proactive, and rooted in ecological expertise:

On-Site Ecological Supervision

  • Wildlife and Habitat Protection: We implement and oversee agreed measures to protect flora and fauna, especially in ecologically sensitive habitats.

Compliance and Best Practice Implementation

These must be adhered to very closely, and our EcoWs ensure that this is the case.
  • Best Practice Application: Applying industry best practices for environmental protection throughout the project.

Communication and Reporting

  • Liaison Between Stakeholders: Acting as the key point of contact for ecological matters between developers, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Regular Reporting: Providing detailed reports on ecological aspects of the project, including any incidents or compliance issues.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
