Countryside Surveys - Northern Ireland
Countryside Surveys have been conducted in the different countries of the United Kingdom since 1978. It is a globally unique audit of the soil and vegetation of the countryside, based on detailed vegetation mapping, plot recording and soil sampling of squares across the country, which are repeated at multi-year intervals.
In Northern Ireland, this survey was first conducted in the 1980s. This pivotal survey is now being repeated in Northern Ireland in the period 2023-2024, offering a unique opportunity to chart the evolving tapestry of Northern Ireland’s natural landscape.
Ecologists working on Countryside Surveys in Northern Ireland
FitzGerald Ecology has a team of ecologists working on this project since 2023 and we have gained extensive experience in the complex methodology of the Countryside Surveys, as well as the specific habitat classification system used for this survey. It is hoped that a similar survey will be undertaken in the Republic of Ireland in the coming years, and FitzGerald Ecology will be an irreplaceable resource when this arises.
