Botanical Surveys

Botanical surveying has been the primary speciality service provided by FitzGerald Ecology since the practice was established in 2015, and these surveys have been spread right across Ireland. Therefore, FitzGerald Ecology is one of the leading Irish consultancies in botanical surveying in Ireland. Our service is dedicated to understanding and conserving the rich plant diversity that adorns Ireland’s landscapes. Our commitment to comprehensive botanical studies stretches across a wide variety of habitats, from the rolling drumlins and lakes of the midlands to rugged coastal cliffs and sand dunes.

Our Approach to Botanical Surveys

Detailed Fieldwork

  • Extensive Site Surveys: Our team conducts in-depth field visits to various habitats, identifying and recording a wide range of plant species. These include legally protected, rare and non-native invasive plant species surveys.

Expert Identification and Assessment

  • Species Identification: Leveraging our extensive in-house botanical expertise, we accurately identify plant species, including rare and threatened taxa. We have expertise in the identification and surveying of species on the Flora (Protection) Order, 2022.
  • Quadrat/Relevé Recording: we often record detailed quadrat/relevé plots within different vegetation types. This is particularly relevant to rare plant species, where vegetation data facilitates a better understanding of the habitat requirements of those rare species and allows for ongoing management of areas where they occur. We also do this for rare/protected habitat types.
  • Ecological Assessment: We assess the ecological significance of plant species and communities on a local, national and international scale.

Species Mapping and Reporting

  • GIS Mapping: All findings from our surveys are meticulously compiled and mapped for our clients, especially for rare or non-native invasive plant species.
  • Detailed Reporting: We provide comprehensive reports outlining the results of the surveys, along with recommendations for conservation and management, where applicable.

Applications of Botanical Surveys

Our Botanical Surveys service is essential for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Conservation and Research: Assisting conservationists and researchers in understanding plant biodiversity.
  • Ecological Management: Guiding landowners and managers in sustainable land use and habitat conservation.
  • Environmental Impact Assessments: Offering critical data for assessing the impact of development projects on rare plant species and communities.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
