Project: Vegetation Study of Ireland’s Eye, Co. Dublin

Location: Ireland’s Eye, Co. Dublin

Scope and Achievements

  • Produced a vegetation study of the entire island of Ireland’s Eye with illustrative maps, using Excel, PC-ORD, and GIS software.
  • Surveyed and mapped rare/legally protected and invasive plants on the island.
  • Recorded permanent quadrats for monitoring vegetation changes over time.
  • Directed and monitored invasive species treatments in 2017, 2019, and 2023.
  • Gave a presentation on the vegetation and habitats of Ireland’s Eye during a public consultation meeting in September 2017 for the draft Ireland’s Eye Management Plan 2018-2022.

Outcome and Impact

  • Successfully completed the Vegetation Study of Ireland’s Eye.
  • Provided information which was integral to the Ireland’s Eye Management Plan 2018-2022.
  • Contributed to the conservation efforts and future management of the island.
  • Played a significant role in guiding invasive species treatments and preserving the island’s natural habitats.
  • Offered valuable experience in active conservation management.

Location: North Co. Dublin

Project: Wild Flora and Habitat Conservation Survey of 28 Parks in North Co. Dublin

Location: North Co. Dublin

Scope and Achievements

  • Conducted a comprehensive wild flora and habitat conservation survey of 28 parks in the North Dublin City Council area.
  • Identified and mapped rare and/or legally protected plant species and vegetation of conservation value in the parks.
  • Discovered a new site for the legally protected plant Groenlandia densa (Opposite-leaved Pondweed) during the survey.
  • Prepared separate concise reports for each park, providing specific conservation management recommendations.
  • Maintained constant communication with park managers and gardeners to relay findings and ensure effective conservation efforts were being enacted on the ground.

Outcome and Impact

  • Completed and delivered reports to the various Parks staff, outlining clear recommendations for appropriate park management.
  • Parks have been managed according to the provided recommendations, resulting in improved local biodiversity.
  • Contributed to the conservation and preservation of wild flora and habitats in the 28 parks.
  • Enhanced the overall ecological value and sustainability of the North Co. Dublin urban area.

Project: Rare Plant Survey of Dalkey Island, Co. Dublin

Location: Dalkey Island, Co. Dublin

Scope and Achievements

  • Conducted a comprehensive rare plant survey of Dalkey Island.
  • Located, mapped, and analysed populations of locally/regionally/nationally rare and/or legally protected plant species, including Trifolium occidentale (Western Clover), Trifolium ornithopodioides (Bird’s-foot Clover), and Vicia lathyroides (Spring Vetch).
  • Provided management recommendations for the various rare plants identified on the island, which has contributed positively to their conservation.

Outcome and Impact

  • Delivered the survey report to the client.
  • The report is actively used to monitor populations of rare plant species on Dalkey Island for conservation purposes.
  • Serves as a baseline for future rare plant surveys on the island, enabling ongoing monitoring and conservation efforts.
  • Contributes to the conservation and protection of rare plant species and their habitats on Dalkey Island, helping to ensure their long-term survival.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
