Habitat Classification
The Role of Habitat Classification in Conservation
Habitat Classification is more than just an organisational tool; it is a fundamental process that underpins successful conservation and ecological impact assessments.
Why Habitat Classification Matters
- Enhanced Understanding: Categorisation helps in gaining a deeper understanding of each habitat’s ecological role and value.
- Prioritisation of Conservation Efforts: It aids in identifying habitats that are most in need of conservation or restoration.
- Customised Conservation Plans: Classification allows for the development of habitat-specific management and conservation strategies.
Habitat Classification is more than just an organisational tool.
The Founder
Alexis FitzGerald
Alexis FitzGerald is a seasoned Ecologist and Owner of FitzGerald Ecology, a thriving botanical and ecological consultancy business based in Dublin, Ireland. With over ten years of experience in the field, Alexis has established himself as a trusted expert in the industry.
Alexis’s journey in ecology began with his studies at Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a B.A. in Plant Science/Botany and an M.Sc. in Biodiversity and Conservation. Armed with a solid educational foundation, he went on to work as a Consultant Ecologist at Scott Cawley Ltd., contributing to significant, nationally important projects such as detailed vegetation mapping for road schemes, ecological impact assessments, appropriate assessments, biodiversity action plans, etc. Alexis’s expertise was also instrumental in conducting various surveys, including bat activity surveys, mammal surveys, winter bird surveys, and breeding bird surveys. In addition to his professional pursuits, Alexis is an active volunteer for groups such as the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI) and the Dublin Naturalists’ Field Club (DNFC) and educates others about plants and ecology.
With his extensive expertise in plant identification, habitat surveying, and ecological impact assessment, Alexis has collaborated with notable organisations including Fingal County Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, Dublin City Council, BEC Ltd., JBA Consulting Ltd., SLR Consulting Ltd., Bord na Mona, UK Centre and Ecology and Hydrology, and more. Having established FitzGerald Ecology in 2015, this business owner rapidly became a trusted name in the industry, providing exceptional botanical and ecological consultancy services across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Our Approach to Habitat Classification
At FitzGerald Ecology, our approach to Habitat Classification is detailed, methodical, and scientific:
Detailed Ecological Surveys
- Field Studies: Our team conducts extensive field studies to gather data on various habitats, examining factors like species composition, soil type, hydrology, and more.
- Species Assessments: We analyse the presence, distribution and abundance of flora species within each habitat to aid in classification.
Data-Driven Classification
- Ecological Data Analysis: We utilise the data collected from field studies to categorise habitats into distinct types based on their ecological characteristics.
- Use of Modern Classification Systems: Our classifications align with nationally and internationally recognised habitat classification systems, ensuring consistency and comparability.
A Guide to Habitats in Ireland by Fossitt (2000), as well as the Irish Vegetation Classification system, are used and applied widely and expertly by our team. European Union Habitats Directive Annex I habitat classifications are also used for habitats relevant to that legislation, as well as Irish interpretations of these habitats as presented in The Status of EU Protected Habitats and Species in Ireland by National Parks and Wildlife Service (2019) as well as various Irish Wildlife Manual issues by NPWS.
