Botanical Identification Training in Ireland

One of the hallmark areas of expertise within FitzGerald Ecology is in botanical identification. This training is headed by Alexis FitzGerald, who has developed his skills over more than 10 years of academic, professional and volunteer experience and research in botany.

The Importance of Botanical Identification

Understanding and accurately identifying plants is a fundamental skill in ecology, which is essential for:

  • Habitat Identification: habitat classifications are built in large part upon the plant species which occupy them and the physical structures and spaces these plants create. Therefore, botanical identification is indispensable for assessing habitats, and thereby the fauna which occupy these habitats. Ecological knowledge really is built on a basis of plants and habitats.
  • Conservation Efforts: Effective management and conservation of habitats depend on accurate plant identification.

  • Biodiversity Monitoring: Monitoring changes in plant communities and biodiversity.

  • Ecological Research: Fundamental for ecological research studies and surveys.

Understanding and accurately identifying plants is a fundamental skill in ecology.

Our Botanical Identification Training Approach

At FitzGerald Ecology, our training program combines theoretical knowledge with practical field experience:

Comprehensive Curriculum

  • Introduction to Irish Flora: Covering the basics of the diverse plant species found in Ireland, including native and invasive species. For more experienced audiences, this may also include training on the identification of rare Irish plant species, including those on the Flora (Protection) Order, 2022.

  • Plant Morphology and Taxonomy: Understanding basic plant structures and taxonomic classification for accurate identification. Separating common plant families by their distinctive features is often a useful way to introduce botanical diversity to audiences.

Hands-On Learning Experience

  • Field Trips and Practical Sessions: Conducting field trips across various habitats in Ireland to practice plant identification skills in real-world settings.

  • Use of Identification Guides and Tools: Training in the use of botanical keys, field guides, hand lenses, microscopes, and other identification tools.

Expert Instruction

  • Led by Experienced Botanists: Our trainers are experienced botanists with extensive knowledge of the Irish flora and many years of surveying experience.

Training Program Details

  • Target Audience: Suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to more experienced practitioners.

  • Course Duration: Variable lengths, from one-day workshops to comprehensive multi-day courses.

  • Location: Training sessions are conducted in various locations, depending on the target species/habitats.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
