Biodiversity Action Plans and Biodiversity Management Plans

Biodiversity Action Plans and Biodiversity Management Plans are strategic documents that outline clear objectives and actions for the conservation, management and enhancement of biodiversity. These plans are vital in the Irish context for:

  • Conserving Native Species and Habitats: Focusing on the protection and recovery of native species and habitats, particularly those that are rare or under threat.
  • Guiding Sustainable Development: Ensuring that development projects and land use changes are conducted in a way that doesn’t just mitigate biodiversity loss but instead protects and enhances it.

Deep understanding of local environments.

Biodiversity Action Plans and Biodiversity Management Plans

FitzGerald Ecology’s approach to developing Biodiversity Action Plans and Biodiversity Management Plans in Ireland is rooted in scientific knowledge, ecological expertise, and a deep understanding of local environments:

Comprehensive Biodiversity Assessment

  • Species and Habitat Surveys: Conducting detailed surveys to assess the current state of biodiversity within the area of interest.
  • Ecological Data Analysis: Analysing data to identify key species and habitats, as well as ecological threats and pressures.

Strategic Plan Development

  • Goal Setting: Establishing clear, achievable goals for biodiversity conservation and enhancement.
  • Actionable Strategies: Developing specific, practical actions to achieve these goals, including habitat restoration, species protection, and sustainable resource management. These should be clear and time-bound objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration

  • Community Involvement: Engaging with local communities, landowners, and other stakeholders to ensure a collaborative approach to biodiversity management.
  • Multi-sectoral Integration: Working across different sectors to integrate biodiversity considerations into broader land-use planning and policy.

Applications of Biodiversity Action/Management Plans

Our Biodiversity Action/Management Plans service is essential for a range of applications in Ireland, including:

  • Local and Regional Authorities: Assisting in the development of local biodiversity strategies and plans.
  • Conservation Organisations: Providing expertise for targeted conservation projects and initiatives.
  • Private Sector: Guiding businesses and developers in incorporating biodiversity considerations into their operations and projects.

Safeguarding Rare Plant Species

In 2022, FitzGerald Ecology completed a full flora study and rare plant survey of four sub-sites within Turvey Nature Reserve, Co. Dublin. As part of this work, we were responsible for the transplantation of two rare plant populations which were at risk of damage from planned environmental engineering works in the area. This transplantation was conducted successfully. This flora study will inform future environmental engineering works to be carried out by the client within Turvey Nature Reserve in the coming years, which is partially within the Rogerstown Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
